CLAIM ALEUTIAN ISLANDS OCCUPIED

(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 10. The Tokio official radio spokes-

man (Hiraide) in a nation-wide broadcast declared that Japan-

ese forces were able to occupy the

Western Aleutian Islands because the enemy was unable to send strong reinforcements on account of the Japanese attack on Midway. U.S. Denies A United States Navy Department spokesman, commenting today on the Japanese claim that troops had been landed on the Aleutian Islands, said, according to a Washington Press message: “None of our inhabited areas, islands or rocks have been troubled with uninvited guests up to the present time.”

The spokesman added that he had no knowledge of any Japanese being on Alaskan soil.

Naval observers in Washington doubt if the Japanese occupation of any of the Aleutian Islands would present any important threat to the American mainland, since a few, if any, are suitable for operation of land-based planes.
