Bruneval Raid Heroes

(8.0. W.) LONDON, June 10. Details are issued of awards to members of the force which successfully raided Bruneval, on the Normandy coast, on the night of February. 27. The success of the operation, it is stated, is largely due to the ability and conduct of Major J. D. Frost, of the Cameronians, who was awarded the Military Cross. “During the course of the attack on the German radio location station,” says the official report, “a critical situation arose after the party detailed to capture the beach had been dropped. As the retain force started to withdraw to the beach heavy fire was opened on them from defences on the south side of the beach. Major Frost immediately grasped the situation, and under closerange fire, directed the attack on the beach which was completely successful in restoring the situation and enabling the boats to be called in for re-embarkation.” Parachutist Decorated

The Military Cross was also won by Second-Lieutenant E. B. C. Charteris, of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, who, after his party was dropped by parachute, displayed the utmost determination and initiative in leading his men across unknown country towards the beach he had been ordered to seize.

It is stated that the success of the operations on the technical side largely depended on Flight-Sergeant C. W. H. Cox, R.A.F. After being dropped by parachute he had only a few minutes to complete a task previously estimated to require half-an-hour, and during that time he was continuously under fire. Flight-Sergeant Cox completed the task —for which he had volunteered.
