Mrs. James Jackson. of _ Walton Street, one of the pioneer residents of Whangarei, celebrated her 88th birthday on Friday last. Those who lived in Whangarei in the days when the population was very small will remember the hospitality and kindliness for which Mrs. Jackson was noted. Stic was a good friend to all who needed {comfort or assistance, and no request for help was refused. She doubtless appreciated the reminders of those {days given by old friends who wished I her many happy returns of her birth-
