Gold-Seekers Must Re-Soil Dredged Land
[Per Pres* Association—Copvrighfl WELLINGTON, This Day. In a statement last night, the Minister for Mines (Mr Webb) referred to the Government’s policy in connection with the granting cf dredging claim licenses. and of steps taken by Government to meet problems which have arisen from the dredging of land suitable for agricultural or pastoral purposes.
After outlining the Mining Amendment Act, 1941, the Minister said he was satisfied it was impossible further to amend the legislation to any material advantage. Henceforth, each application for a dredging license would be dealt with on its merits, and where reports disclosed that good, or potentially good, farming land was involved, re-soiling or at least re-sur-facing of the dredged land would be made a condition of any license, even if compliance with such conditions would render dredging operations uneconomical.
It would be as well, therefore, for persons taking up areas with a view to testing their dredging possibilities, to inquire as to the likelihood of dredging being permitted, and if so as to the conditions which would be imposed upon any license which might be granted, before incurring any substantial expenditure on prospecting and boring.
