New Fire Bell Tower For Kaitaia
Muffled and spasmodic bell peals aroused the curiosity of Kaitaia residents on Saturday morning, but the mystery was soon solved. The well-known fire bell and low tower in President Street were being removed a few yards to enable a new tower, some five times as high, to be erected in its place. War is responsible for the change, for it is in an endeaovur to secure a warning signal with the maximum of sound coverage that the new tower is being built. Recent tests showed that of three types of warning signal—siren, air whistle and bell—the bell was the best, and it is considered that placed higher up it would be heard in all parts of the town. The tower, designed by Mr D. Buckle, is to be 52ft. high, with a base 26ft. by 18ft. set in concrete foundations. The bell will be housed in a small belfry and will be run either electrically from the pest office, or, in the event of a power breakdown, manually. The new structure will also afford what the brigade have long-needed—a place to dry-out wet hoses —and, with a ladder to the bell, valuable practice in ladder work.
Work is proceeding and the new tower is expected to be in place in a fortnight.
