War Resister Gets Imprisonment And Defaulter’s Camp

Staling_that he considered he could do more for humanity by being a war resister, John Cuthbert Gillingham, a farm hand, of Maungakaramea, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, with hard labour, to be followed by detention in a defaulters’ camp, when he appeared before the Magistrate (Mr. Raymond Ferner) at the Whangarei court this morning. Gillingham refused to plead to a charge of failing to report for military duty at Whangarei on February 14. Staff-Sergeant D. Ross stated that Gillingham had been called in an overseas ballot and had been graded one medically. He had appealed against service, but his appeal on conscientious grounds was dismissed by the No. 1A Armed Forces Appeal Board.

Subsequently he had failed to report at a mobilisation camp and .when gazetted had failed to report at the Army Office, Whangarei, on February 14. This evidence was corroborated by Lieutenant A. G. W. Hewitt.
