Personal Pars

The Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall) and Lady Newall iwill leave Wellington next Wednesday to pay a number of official visits ip the Northland district. They will later proceed to Auckland, where they will go into residence at Government House.

Members of the Kaikohe Chamber of Commerce stood in silence at their last meeting in honour of Pte. Ted Robinson, whose death overseas was reported recently. A letter of sympathy is to be forwarded to Mr and Mrs S. G. Robinson, Mr Robinson being an active member of the chamber.

The Rev. and Mrs. K. Poata, of Pu-, puke, Northland, have received advice that their son, Captain William Poata, of the Maori Battalion, has been awarded the Military Cross. Born at Kawakawa 24 years ago, Captain Poata attended St. Stephen’s and Te Aute Colleges, representing each at Rugby. Later he played for the Whangaroa County. He volunteered fo rthe Maori Battalion early in the war, and received a commission before going overseas with the Second Echelon. He served in Greece and Crete, and then in the recent campaign in Libya, where he (was awarded his decoration.

Members of the Rawene Golf Club farewelled two prominent members, Mr and Mrs J. Beveridge, at an afternoon held in the Masonic Hotel recently. In the absence of the presL dent (Mr M. Kelly, of Waima). Mr A. Andrewes spoke of the keen interest Mr Beveridge had taken in local activities and presented him with a wallet on behalf of the club. On behalf of the lady members, Mrs T. Miller presented Mrs Beveridge with a set of crystal glasses, after which several more speakers wished Mr Beveridge the best of luck in his military duties.
