Making Of Camouflage Nets

The local branch of the W.W.S.A. has been advised as follows by the head office:

There appears to be a certain amount of confusion in the minds of some camouflage net-makers as to the correct number of castings needed to produce the specified size nets. This is evident from numerous inquiries. ancJ also the variation in the size and the number of mesh in the nets already manufactured by many of the organisations engaged in this work.

Under the circumstances a fairly close check on the nets has been kept by the Army Department with a view to, as near as possible, determining the best method of manufacture and a standardised size and weight of the nets. Taking into account the variation of the size of mesh, tightness of knots and methods of manufacture, ihe Army have endevoured to arrive at an average standard, but at the same time not skimping the size of the nets.

In this respect the Army have arrived at the conclusion that, bv tJ»e use of a 2in by ((jin. template, 64 mesh both ways should prbduce a 14ft by 14ft net, and this is the size of the net that the Auxiliary has been asked to concentrate on.

In order that the making of camouflage nets be (as near as possible) standardised, and it is desired by the Central Executive that instructions to this effect be issued to all organisations anc. 1 women engaged in this work. Various complaints have been received in this office that conflicting instructions are being Issued by individual women engaged in the making of nets. The Central Executive desire it be clearly understood' that instructions issued from this office are to be adhered to and no departure made therefrom. Should any different instructions be issued by instructors or other persons, the persons concerned should be referred to the local office.
