Peter of Whangarei
The “Children's Newspaper.” published in London on September 20. 1941, contains an article with the caption "Peter of Whangarei." It begins: “We have had the pleasure of meeting one Peter of New Zealand, its Prime Minister. Now the Science Master of the Whangarei High School introduces us to another: Peter the wise dog of the school." The paper then reprints the story told by the "Advocate" at the time of Peter’s death. Peter, a halfbred Alsatian, was a most popular Iricnd of the pupils at the High School. He was always with them on the playground. in the quadrangle, and in the assembly hall at prayers. It was stated that, apparently in place of a prayer book, he invariably took a stone into the hall, placed in on the floor during prayers, and carried it away when the pupils retired. He was never late on parade, never went to the school grounds on a Saturday, a Sunday or a holiday, and in every way proved himself to be a sagacious and friendly animal, whose death was deplored by { young and old at the school. |
