Less Petrol For Noe-War Purposes

(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, February 17. A move to reduce to the minimum the petrol used for non-war purposes in Australia is expected almost immediately, says a Sydney message. Palembang. which has been taken by the Japanese, was the major source of the Australian petrol supply. The Japanese air attack on Allied shipping in the Timor Sea yesterday occupied an hour, according to an Australian communique issued today by the Federal Minister for Air (Mr -Drakeford). Fcrty-four Japanese machines participated, but despite concentrated bombing not one hit was scored. The communique adds that Japanese reconnaissance planes apeared over Port Moresby in New Guinea yesterday but were .driven off by anti-aircraft fire.
