WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

The December meeting of the Paparoa Women’s Institute, presided t.ve.r by Mrs T. Wilson, was a happy function, taking the form of a Christmas party and Christmas tree. All the schoolchildren and tiny tots of the district, together wih their parents, were present, and a jolly time was spent. The children provided the programme, which was very much appreciated and which reflected great credit on their teachers. The juniors—Miss Evans' pupils —entertained with recitations and pretty little "singing dances,” followed by rounds and part-singing by the seniors— Mr Cole’s pupils. Two solos on the recorder were also well received. Attention was then turned to the Christmas tree, which was prettily decorated with tiny fairy lights and gifts and toys. The success of the whole affair was due to the splendid organisation and co-operation of so many willing helpers Mrs Hay was in charge of the Christmas tree, and most of the presents, which were varied and useful, were home-made. With the help of several members who quickly undressed the tree, Mrs Hay distributed the gifts to approximately 1015 children, including the babies. One hundred fancy paper hats were made and donated by Mrs McKean (secretary) and Mrs Tibbits. These were served to the children with their gifts and greatly added to the festive appearance. Ice creams were made by members from cream donated.

Mrs Jordan was in charge of this department, assisted by a band of willing helpers. Mrs Efford. with her assistants, served the cold drinks to the children. The hostesses, Mesdames G. Hames, Valance, Hudson and Miss S. Cliff, and several other members served afternoon tea. Mr Cole (head master) thanked the Institute for giving the schoolchildren the opportunity of taking part in the life out of school. He remarked that the best preparation for outer life was participation in that life. Elsie Griffin, on behalf of the schoolchildren, thanked the president and members of the Institute for the afternoon.
