“Western Union” At The Regent
AMUSEMENTS
Patrons of the Regent last evening were given a great treat when a picturisation of Zane Grey’s novel “Western Union" was screened for the first time. Apart from the merit of the story, the technicolor of the film was a rare delight. it being of a particularly realistic character. “Western Union” resurrects the sights and happenings of the early days of the United States, when the famous telegraph corporation was linking the two coasts by means of a thin wire. This was a huge undertaking at a time when Indians were to be dealt with and the difficulties of desert wastes, rivers, mountains and forests had to be overcome. It called for real pioneering, and the story which Zane Grey has woven about one party, which included all classes of humanity, is brimful of adventure and real interest, as may well be imagined. Excitement reaches a high level with the thundering of hoofs and the attacks of real and pseudo Indians, while the line-erecting party contend with bad white men. It is all good clean western drama, with its love theme and its portrayal of life as it was in the picturesque days of long ago. Robert Young, Randolph Scott and Virginia Gilmore stand out prominently, while Slim Summerville is his humorous self as a chef. A piquant Terry Toon and a long series of war pictures from northern Africa complete a fine offering, which will be repeated this evening.
