Cricketers Appreciate New Grass Wickets
Appreciation of cricket players and clubs for the excellent faculties provided at Kensington Park was expressed by the secretary of the Whangarei Cricket Association in a letter received at the monthly meeting of the borough council on Tuesday night. “Players were delighted with the state of the wickets and outfields,” he stated. “While we realise that the only way to test the wickets is by play over a period of weeks, we do appreciate the wonderful effort made to bring the wickets to their present state.
Safeguarding Grounds
“We desire to express our deep appreciation of the effort made by the parks committee and particularly to Mr. Thomson (committee chairman) for his keen interest in the job. We thank the council for the assistance so readily given and we trust the present harmonious relations will continue for many years with profit and pleasure to both bodies.”
The Mayor (Mr. W. Jones): There is still a bit of kindness felt towards the borough council. Cr. J. G. Draper said that he had been umpiring at the matches and it was a treat to go on the ground. Last Saturday three showers had occurred and play had continued, but when it was discovered the wickets would suffer, play had ceased.
Such action was commendable and showed that players were anxious to protect the grounds, commented the Mayor. ’ /
