Sydney Avenged Australian Ship
(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. It was officially announced today that the Australian steamer Mareeba, with a crew of 44, was among the victims of the German raider Kormoran, sunk by the Sydney. The Mareeba was sent to her doom between Ceylon and Sumatra some weeks ago. Since then nothing has been known of the fate of the crew, the relatives of whom were notified weeks ago. but they still cling to 'the hope that the men may have been transferred to some other enemy vessel.
The Mareeba’s captain was' M. B. Skinner, of Bondi, and the chief officer, D. J. Freeman, was a New Zealander, whose wife and family live in a Sydney suburb. A German communique, referring to the loss of the Sydney, says the cruiser sank with the whole of the ship’s company. The Kormoran was under the command of LieutenantCommander Detmers. ’ -
