Good Quality Calves At Ahipara School

[Per Press Association—Copyright.]

KAITAIA, This Day

“The biggest group of calves I have ever judged at any school,” commented the judge (Mr H. M. Thompson) at the Ahipara School Calf Club parade on Tuesday. Thirty-two calves were shown. With the calves of today recognised as the cows of tomorrow, the dairy industry realised that its future depended on the proper care of calves, Mr. Thompson said. The first three prize-winning calves were good, and the winning calf was up to the standard seen by Mr. Thompson at the Broadv/ood central parade. All calves were a credit to the children who reared them. Mr. Thompson congratulated the children, the parents and the head teacher (Mr. E. J. Wills) on the success of the parade. Special Prize A special prize donated by Mrs. Packard for the best reared calf went to Rawiri Kerehoma, and the judge’s prizes for calf racing went to Harriet Paratene’s Busby 1 and Ellen Smith's Mary 2. A prize was also donated by Mr. R. Heal for the best cared-for calf. When presentations were made, the calf club chairman (Dorothy Urlich) took the chair and speeches of welcome were delivered by the senior prefect (Jean Berghan). She welcomed the judge, the chairman of the school committee (Mr. Matthew), and the agricultural instructor (Mr. Steele) and the “Northern Advocate” representative. Replying for the guests, Mr. Thompson congratulated the speaker on her address and the school club on the success of its parade.
