Why Tommy Farr Did Not Meet Lee Harvey

The’ well-known and unmistakable Welsh-American accent hit my left ear when I picked up the telephone.

Fifty miles away at the other end of the line Tommy Farr was holding foiyth with considerable heat'. It seems that Tommy has the needle to a certain Pilot-Officer Leonard Harvey, heavy-weight champion of Great Britain.

A few days ago Harvey announced to a certain scribe that a “surprise” hitch had occurred in the arrangements being made for him to fight Farr in London.

“Tommy apparently wouldn’t sign,” Harvey is reported to have said.

Farr emphatically denies this. He says that he told Harvey he was perfectly willing to fight as soon as he had recovered from an operation he has recently undergone. “Only three people know that I was to have an operataion,” Tommy told me. “Harvey was one of them, and since he was well aware that I could not fight until ,1 was better it is nonsense to talk of ‘ surprise ’ hitches.”

Farr had been out of the nursing home two days when he phoned me. He says he soon hopes to be fit again..

“Just as soon as I am,” ho added, “I’ll take on Harvey for any charity and any sidestake he cares to put up.” Them’s fighting words, Tommy!
