S.P.C.A. Reports Successful Year
A satisfactory year’s work was reported at the annual meeting of the Whangarei Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals held last evening under the chairmanship of, the president (Mr F. A. Farmer). The annual report stated that although the year had been marked by difficult conditions, the income and capital position had been maintained closely to the standard of previous years. The income had shown only a slight falling off, and would be offset by the 1941-42 figures, because the tireless ladies’ committee had raised £33 as the result of a sale held last week. This amount was received after the society’s books had been closed for this year. For a period during the year the society had been without the services of an inspector, and, again the increased difficulties of obtaining petrol had seriously interfered with the work in the country. Nevertheless, a close watch had been maintained. Although the policy of the society was “prevention,” punishment, of offenders during the. year had contributed more than £ls to the society’s funds. The report, which was regarded as very satisfactory, was adopted, and the opinion expressed that propaganda in the interests of prevention of cruelty, apart from inspections and investigations, should be used as far as possible. Officers Elected Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr F. A. Farmer (reelected) ; trustees, F. A. Farmer and A. M. Woods; veterinary surgeon, Mr T. H. Hankin; auditor, Mr F. L. Gunn; secretary, Miss P. Abbott; committee, Captain and Mrs W. R. Patterson, Mrs A. Ferguson, •■Mrs C. Smith, Mr and Mrs W. R. Fricker, Mr J. A. Inkste'r. Inspector’s Report The society’s inspector (Mr W. R. McKenzie) reported on his work during the year. He stated that he had made a special tour of the three northern counties, and had found the people sympathetic and willing to form branches to co-operate in the prevention of cruelty to animals. He had given special attention to loading and unloading of cattle, pigs and sheep [at the railway stations, and during the year had disposed of 50 animals, including dogs and cats. The fees obtained had paid all travailing expenses. A Valued Member Regret was expressed at the absence of Mrs W. R. Patterson, a devoted friend of dumb animals, who was in hospital recovering from a severe operation. Tributes were paid to the work' she had done during many years past in the interests of the society, and it was decided to send her a letter expressing the hope that she would soon be fully recovered. In reporting that the shop conducted by the ladies’ -committee for the sale of articles made and collected during the year had realised £33. hearty thanks was extended to the j ladies and all who had assisted.
