One case of measles from tne Kensington Fark military camp was admitted to the Whangarei Hospital this morning, while two territoral patients, one of whom had recovered from meningitis, were discharged. Over £l4 was netted at this function, one of a series of dances conducted for patriotic purposes. Last night’s dance was attended by a large crowd, showing that the popularity of these functions is increasing. * « * a Kiripaka Bush Purchase A contribution of £25 towards the purchase of an area of bush at Kiripaka, about 12 miles from Whangarei and fronting the Whangarei-Ngunguru Road was made by the Whangarei Borough Council last night on the recommendation of the legal and finance committee. * * * * No Inquest Necessary A certificate in connection with the sudden death of Arthur Andersen, an old-age pensioner, of Onerahi, has been issued by a Whangarei doctor who had attended him and an inquest will not be necessary. It is understood there are no relatives in New Zealand, but that he had a wife and family in Denmark. * * * Wool Appraisal Prices realised at the first wool appraisement of the 1941-42 season in Wellington, which was completed yesterday, were very satisfactory and quality and style taken into account were equivalent to last year’s realisations. Altogether 20.995 bales were submitted. * * * * Rate Arrears Recovery Where in the opinion of the town clerk no reasonable steps are being taken by defaulting ratepayers to clear up arrears of rates a summons is to be issued and steps taken for the recovery 'of the amount owing. This was the decision of the Whangarei Borough Council at its meeting last night, on the recommendation of the legal and finance committee. * * * * Murder Charge ) Arrested on Monday evening after discharge from Dunedin hospital, where he received treatment for a throat wound, Charles Henry Flaxman, aged 34, farm hand, of Moa Flat was yesterday charged with the murder of his wife, Marion Beatrice Flaxman, aged 25. A remand till December 17 was granted. * t O * Rest Room Grant That the grant of £26 per annum to the Whangarei branch of the Plunket Society for cleaning and caretaking at the ladies’ rest room should be increased to £SO per annum as from] April 1 of this year, was recommended to the Whangarei Borough Council at its meeting last evening by the legal and finance committee. The recommendation was approved. i' * * Borough Council Purchase The purchase of land in Water Street adjoining Central Fark was approved by the Whangarei Borough Council at its monthly meeting last evening. A committee appointed to negotiate regarding the acquisition of the land reported that the owners were prepared to sell the whole area, and on its recommendation the council agreed to purchase. * * * * Pool Nears Completion With the completion of the new weir by the placing of 4in. overflow pipes on the crest of the structure, the only work remaining to be done in connection with stormwater drainage at Central Park was the construction of 15ft. of side wall, the engineer (Mr. I. A. Cromie) reported to the monthly meeting of the Whangarei Borough Council last evening. * * * 9 Farewelled In Kaikohe on Monday evening, the many friends met at the residence of Mr and Mrs F. V. Eisenhut to bid Constable D. Robertson farewell prior to his departure for Otorohanga. After a number of short speeches, the host presented Constable Robertson with a case of Louis pipes as a token of the respect in which they held him while he was administering the law in Kaikohe. * * * * Riponui Machine-gunners A successful shoot was conducted by the Riponui Home Guard machinegun platoon on the pi’operty of Mr. G. Phyn, a high standard of marksmanship being revealed. Targets had been prepared by Sergeant C. Dobson and Corporal A. Vining and the range selected was found to be eminently suitable. The standard displayed was largely the results of the efforts of the commander-instructor (Lieutenant J. J. Powell), who had been training the men only over a short period.

First Swimming Club Night The large'attendance at the Whangarei Swimming Club’s first club night last evening augured well for the 1942 season. As lighting arrangements have not yet been completed, it was not possible to carry out a full programme of events, and it was decided to commence club nights in the future at 6.15 p.m. so that the usual events could be swum. The large attendance and the enthusiasm of the competitors was very gratifying to the officials responsible for the organisation.

* * * * Dogs Don’t Read Consideration of prohibition of dogs in parks was asked by the North Auckland Forest Society in a letter to the Whangarei Borough Council at its meeting last evening. It was pointed out that the by-laws required dogs to be leashed and that council officers were doing their best to control tl?e animals, it being decided to inform the society to this effect. “Dog’s don’t take any notice of them,” remarked Cr. D. J. Thomson when another councillor stated that there were notice boards in the parks.
