Petain Deprives Weygand Of African Post
(Rec. 1 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 20 It is officially announced from Vichy that General Weygand has retired and that the Delegate-Generalship of North Africa has been abolished.
General Jilin has been appointed Commander-in-Chief in North Africa and General Barrau Commander-in-Chief in West Africa.
A Permanent Secretariat-General for French Africa replaces the GovernorGeneralship. Vice-Admiral Fenard has been appointed Permanent Secretary-General of French Africa. M. Ch'atel has been appointed Governor-General of Algeria.
General Weygand is going to the Riviera for a brief holiday. The United States Ambassador in Vichy called on Marshal Potain last night. An agency message says he urged Marshal Pelain to confirm General Weygand's appointment as Dele-gate-General in French North Africa. Would Not Reveal Plan? The “Daily Express” says General Weygand was sacked on Hitler’s orders because he refused to disclose his. plans for the defence of North Africa during a three days’ conference which he had with Petain. The Secretary for the Colonies (M. Platon) has gone to Africa to gather afresh the information concerning the situation in North Africa which General Huntziger was bringing back to Vichy when he was killed. Industrial Unrest The prefect of the Paris police has obtained permission from the Nazi administrator of occupied France (von
Stulpnagel) to draft in 6000 mobile guards for night patrols in the industrial suburbs because of the growing threats of strikes. The contingent will be specially entrusted to stamp out night assaults on German barracks. News has leaked out of an attack by young Frenchmen with hand grenades on a German infantry post, which resulted in many casualties. Non-Co-operation Darlan has received reports of further deterioration of relations between the civil population and the German authorities in occupied France. French railway workers are particularly troublesome to the Germans, hampering the transport of food to the German armies. Food requisitioning has become more difficult because of the non-co-operation of the farmers with the village authorities, in defiance of German orders.
