Anzacs Back From Darwin With Grouch
SYDNEY, November 20. Bringing back no illusions of tropical glamour but only memories of heat, flies and crushing boredom, 200 Australian garrison troops on short leave from Darwin have arrived in Sydney, having made a journey of 3100 miles by train and motor truck. Not one man, says “The Sun,” had a kind word for any aspect of Darwin life. The chief complaint was against the authorities’ refusal to permit the men to go overseas for active service which would relieve the boredom endured for nine months at Darwin. The Minister for the Army has taken the matter up and intends to make conditions more attractive and comfortable for those who in future will be garrisoned there.
The ceain has occurred of Mr George Witty, M.P. for Riccarton from 1902 to 1925, and a former M.L.C., at the age of 35.
