The Rev. G. Brown, of Whangarei. is attending the Methodist Synod at Auckland.

Miss A. M. Blakey, who has been secretary of the Whangarei Y.W.C.A. for the past two years, is leaving shortly to take up a similar position at Wellington. The Rev. Alan C. Watson, of St. Paul’s Church, Christchurch, has received a call from the Toorak Presbyterian Church, Melbourne. The present minister of Toorak is the Rt. Rev. Dr. John Mackenzie, who was called there in 1914 from St. Andrew's Church, Christchurch. The Mangonui County Council, at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, passed a vote of condolence to Mr. and Mrs. J. T. B. Taaffe and family and stood for a brief period in silence. The youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Taaffe died during the month as the result of an accident. The chairman (Mr. L. J. Matthews), Mr. F. Holder and the secretary (Mr. C. McKinnon) are to represent the Awanui Harbour Board at the Northland Harbour Boards’ conference at Kaikohe for the purpose of discussing with Mr. W. Grounds the allegedly unfair rail competition with coastal shipping. The Mayor of Whangarei (Mr William Jones) is visiting Wellington on patriotic business. Today as a member of the National Patriotic Council he is attending a meeting of that body, and tomorrow he will attend a meeting of the National Patriotic Fund Board as a delegate from the Auckland Provincial Council.

Major-General R. Young, C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., Commander of the New Zealand Home Guard, arrived at Whangarei today. He is to make a tour of Northland to contact personnel of the Home Guard, particularly officers and senior n.c.o's. Major-General Young will address meetings-' of the Home Guard throughout the whole of the North, and his tour, which will occupy about a week, will take him as far north as Te Kao.
