Maori Settlement Aids National Savings

[Special to “Northern Advocate”] KAIKOHE, This Day. A large number attended a public meeting held at Tautoro on Monday evening to hear addresses by Messrs S. G. Robinson and F. A. Dunstal, of Kaikohe, in connection with National Savings. The speakers were introduced by the headmaster of the Tautcro Native School (Mr. H. B. White), who recommended the scheme as a most worthy one. In his address Mr. Robinson emphasised that in order to gain victory, united effort was necessary. Sacrifices should not be left to the soldiers only. National Savings now would help to provide the funds so urgently needed for war purposes and later, during post-war reconstruction the accumulated deposits would surely be a factor in helping everyone, soldiers and all, back to a life of peace, goodwill, and prosperity. Mr. Hei Te Rore who interpreted the various points raised, suggested the formation of a local committee to ensure that all residents opened accounts and maintained regular deposits. The suggestion met with full support and Messrs H. B. White, Huirua Whiu, Hei Te Rore and Mohi Maera were appointed.

To Facilitate Deposits Owing to the difficulty experienced by settlers residing In isolated areas in making deposits, a proposal to seek the co-operation of the dairy factory in the matter was warmly received. It was also agreed that pensioners * should be encouraged to deposit a y portion of their allowance in a Na-1 tional Savings account. • A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. f H. B. White, who has proved a valiant I worker in the National interests. f During the evening 23 accounts were f opened thereby enabling the “money I ball” at the Kaikohe Post Office to con- f tinue its steady climb towards the £ summit. i
