Canada To Mass-Produce Australian Machine-Gun
(Received 2.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. (LA NAD A HAS ASKED AUSTRALIA FOR THE PLANS OF THE OWEN GUN. The Canadian Government Trade Commissioner (LieutenantColonel Cosgrave) has been much impressed by the gun’s simplicity, cheapness and efficiency, and expects that its production will be undertaken in Canada on a very large scale. ■Lieutenant-Colonel Oosgrave emphasised the desire of the Canadian Government to obtain drawings and a sample of the gun in order that production might be commenced as early as possible. The Minister for the Army (Mr. F. M. Forde) promised to do all in his power to have the gun drawings and a sample of the gun forwarded to Canada immediately. The Owen gun is an Australian invented sub-machine-gun. It was invented by a plasterer, a former member of the Australian forces, Mr. Evelyn Owen. It possesses only one moving part, compared with several in the case of others. Its main achievement is its amazing accuracy after immersion in water and slush and burial in sand and mud comparable with conditions met with under the worst war conditions.
