Cornering Raises Prices, Says Victorian P.M.
(Rec. 11 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Attacking price rises generally, the Premier of Victoria (Mr. A. A. Dunstan) said the manufacturers were deliberately withholding stocks against a price rise. They were creating artificial shortages which appeared and disappeared automatically. For years manufacturers had adopted the same technique. He found it hard to understand why certain manufacturers and retailers should not be expected to carry at least a proportion of the increased prices due to war conditions. Mr. Dunstan’s statement followed an announcement that the price of tea in Australia would be increased by 2d a pound from Monday. Popular brands will now sell at from 3/6 to 3/8 a pound—l/3 a pound above the prewar price. The Price Commissioner (Professor D. B. Copland), said the latest rise - was due wholly to increases in overseas costs.
