Jockey Killed When 6 Horses Fall; Te Rapa Sensation

QNE OF THE MOST SENSATIONAL FALLS TO OCCUR ON ANY RACECOURSE IN THE DOMINION FOR A LONG TIME TOOK PLACE AT THE TURN FOR HOME IN THE FRANKTON HANDICAP AT TE RAPA TODAY WHEN SEVERAL HORSES FELL AND THE WELL-KNOWN RIDER R. W. McTAVISH WAS KILLED INSTANTLY. McTavish was lading Golden Valley and she was racing in fourth position when the field reached the straight. The track was soft and cutting out. Golden Bay appeared to get on to the heels of one of the three leaders and eimie down. Flying Cross falling over her. A shambles promptly occurred. Irish Love, Mark Anthony, Tea •Drop and Rohm Nni all came down, falling, fortunately, away from the rails. McTavish was dead when picked up, but the other riders, with the exception of A. Bin ton, who was riding Tea Drop, quickly scrambled to their feet and appeared to have escaped injury. Sinton was taken to the casualty room for examination.

Among the outstanding wins to his credit were the Great Northern Derby (Martama and Red Heckle), Great Northern Foal Stakes (Gallio and Route March), Auckland Racing Club Royal Stakes (Route March), Great Northern Guineas (Hot Box and Miss ■Egypß. Auckland Racing Club Welcome Stakes (Laughing Prince), Great Northern Oaks (Danae and Lady Pam), Auckland Racing Club Easter Handicap (Jonathan). Avondale Stakes (Lovaals), Avondale Cup (Te Kara, King Knave, and Scotland). He had but one ride in a steeplechase, the occasion being when he won ihe New Zealand Grand National on peter Maxwell in 1926.
