Christchurch To Have Asbestos Factory
[Per Press Association. —Copyright! CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A license has been granted to a company which will be known as Dominion Asbestos, Ltd., for the erection of buildings and plant and manufacturing rights of all types of asbestos products. The Minister for Industries and Commerce (Mr Sullivan) said last night that this factory would be established in Christchurch. The company has already secured land for buildings, and had given an undertaking that they would call tenders within the next two months for the buildings. As the greater portion of the machinery was being built in New Zealand, it was anticipated the plant would be in operation within five months. Unit In Auckland “The establishment of this factory in Christchurch is following the policy that the Government has advocated of establishing New Zealand industries throughout the country,” continued the Minister. “At present a large asbestos factory is operating in Auckland. Christchurch therefore offered a natural location for a second unit. Asbestos is urgently required today for all types of buildings connected with, the war effort, and as the present unit in Auckland is not capable of coping with the demand,, it is of vital importance that this industry should be established so as to give the fullest assistance ni connection with our war effort.”
