Blackout Standstill In Auckland
[Special to “Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND, This Day. Throughout the metropolitan area all passenger transport will be stopped on Sunday night during the period of the blackout trial. All trams and passenger buses will come to a standstill at 9 o’clock when the warning signal will be given, and will remain stationary, with all traffic and interior lights extinguished, until the “all clear” signal is given at 9.30. A similar arrangement has been agreed to by various bus companies operating services on city and suburban routes, and all ferry services will be suspended. Aeroplane “Spotter” Emergency lighting is to be permitted in the case of certain vehicles required for emergency purposes, such as ambulances, fire engines, police and military vehicles. Efforts are being made to have an aeroplane flying over the area with an observer checking over the trial. Messages from the aircraft will be broadcast, so that any defect can be remedied while the blackout is still in progress. Aeroplane observation was used in the recent blackout trials in Sydney with satisfactory results.
