Prisoner Of War Asks Specially For Woollens

Sergeant Terence McKoy, of Wha- ; ngarei, expects to spend Christmas in \ a German prison camp, i In a series of letters to his parents j he wrote cheerfully and said that he was regaining the use of hi's arm in (which he had received a wound, j “I would like woollen goods and tucker-anythi'ng useful to be enclosed,” he said. Despite the open air life of the prison camp, he remarked that he was not putting on weight. Reading material was apparently scarce, because Sergeant McKoy admitted reading ’“trash”, adding that he “had even sunk so low that I read anything, even love yarns.” A concert held in the camp had done much to relieve the monotony. Apart from yarning with fellow prisoners there was little to do. Flew On Troop Carrier “I was captured in a hospital on Crete,” Sergeant McKoy wrote. “From Crete we were flown by troop carrier plane across to Greece. The trip in the ’plane was jolly interesting and very nice. I had a great view of the hundreds of islands that are set in the I blue waters of the Aegean. Every so often a glimpse would be visible of groups of white stone houses. “Then again there could be seen the olive groves and irrigation ditches. “Fishing smacks with their snowwhite sails further added to the picturesqueness.” He received the freedom of the hospital grounds, and, with his friends, walked several miles in the cool of the evening. “I do quite well on five fags a week,” he said.
