Luftwaffe Has Not Taken Canaries

(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 7. It is authoritatively denied that there is the slightest foundation for the report that the Luftwaffe has occupied the Canary Islands, off the north-west coast of Africa, with 500 aircraft plus the necessary personnel. It is pointed out, that Lisbon, where the story originated, is at present notorious for foundationless rumours, the latest of which is particularly absurd in view of the recent statement on the German shortage of aircratf and the concentration of the bulk of the air force on the eastern front. A message from Lisbon stated that the Canary Islands, owned by Spain, off the north-west coast of Africa have been occupied by the German air force. 500 aeroplanes of various types being used in the operation. The reaction of America is awaited. The impression prevails that General Franco must have acquiesced in the move.
