Quarter Of Maoris Live In Northland

[Special to “Northern Advocate"! AUCKLAND, This Day. Referring to the Maori Mission in his address to the Auckland Diocesan Synod yesterday, the Bishop of Auckland (Bishop W. J. Simkin) said that the Maori population had increased from 45,500 in 1901 to 82,326 in 1936, and it was estimated that one-quarter of the Maori people lived in Northland, where limited scope for land settlement accentuated its economic problems. Few Clergymen The Bishop also referred to the urgent requirements of the diocese for the provision of more religious ministration in country districts. The Bishop quoted census figures to show that the Anglican Church in New Zealand had one clergyman to every 1257 members, the Presbyterian Church one to 880, the Roman Catholic Church one to 500, the Methodist Church one to 389 and the Baptist Church one to 287.
