Move To Adjourn Dispute Until End Of War
rPer Press Association.— Copyright] DUNEDIN, This Day. An unusual proceeding was attempted and defeated at a session of the Conciliation Council yesterday at whi'ch the Commissioner (Mr. S. Ritchie) presided. The dispute was between the Otago and Southland Hairdressers and Tobacconists’ Assistants’ Union, and employers. At the opening, Mr. V. S. Jacobs, one of the employers’ assessors, moved : “That this meeting of the Conciliation Council be adjourned till the world war is ended.” He gave his reasons for the motion, which was opposed by the representatives of the union. After discussion, Mr. Ritchie said he would put the motion, though ft was the first he had put in ten years. In his opinion, it was not according to law. He voted against it on the ground, that it was outside the business of the council to stop proceedings that had legally gone the full journey to that The council proceeded -to its normal business, with the result that agreement was reached on all points except the hours of work and wages, which were referred to the Arbitration Court.
