Wants Whangarei Council To Watch Music

Among its many other duties the Whangarei Borough Council is expected to keep a watchful eye on performances in the town hall involving the use of music. “Our records indicate your committee has not effected a license authorising the public performance of copyright music at dances and other musical entertainments which may, from time to time, be held in the hall,” stated a letter received at the monthly meeting of the council last night from the attorney for New Zealand for the Australasian Performing Rights Association Ltd. Directly Responsible “It may be that the hall is never let or used lay your committee for public musical entertainments. If such is the case we should esteem it a favour if you would advise us to this effect in order that our records can be corrected. “If, however, public musical entertainments do take place in this establishment, then it is essential that our license be effected if our members’ music is to be made available for public performance. “Those who authorise or are in control of the public performances are directly liable for infringing performances unless the necessary permission has been received in advance of performance. “It would be virtually impossible to hold a modern dance without the use of our members’ music. The letter was received, the council deciding to take r.o action.
