Other Drivers Strike When One Dismissed
[Spec’al to "Northern Advocate”! AUCKLAND, This Day. Following a dispute over the dismissal of a driver employed by a city carrying and contracting firm, Messrs J. J. Craig, Ltd., the other drivers ceased work as a protest yesterday morning and the stoppage continued throughout the day. The Minister for Labour (Mr Webb), who was in Auckland, intervened, and arrangements were made to have the issue referred to a disputes committee as provided under the award. Mr Webb said last night that the first he knew of any trouble was when the employers’ representative telephoned him asking for an interview Disputes Committee “He said he did not know the nature of the interview until they stated their case. He pointed out to the deputation that machinery was provided in awards and agreements through which disputes could be settled and that this was the proper way to deal with the matter. However, in view of the fact that they had met him, he immediately took steps through the Labour Department to arrange for a disputes committee to meet at the earliest moment to consider the dispute.
