Whangarei Borough Council Business

Suggested alterations to the conveniences in John Street were placed before the Whangarei Borough Council at its monthly meeting last evening by the engineer (Mr. I. A. Cromie). The alterations, which the engineer said were necessary from a public health point of view, were estimated to cost £32. The legal and finance committee’s recommendation that the report should be adopted was approved. Willows in Stieam—At the last meeting of the council 11 residents living near the Waiaraki Stream asked for willows to be cleared from where the stream junctioned with the Waiorahia Stream to a point near Maunu Road. The question was referred to the works committee, which last night recommended that the petitioners should be advised that provision had been made in the stormwater loan to clear willows from the. Waiaraki Stream and that the work would be put in hand when the season was suitable. The recommendation was adopted. Cemetery Cleaning—The works committee reported that it had asked the engineer to arrange for the cleaning up of the Kioreroa Cemetery at the most suitable time. . Abattoir Opening—Reporting to® the council the abattoir committee stated that it had asked the Mayor and the chairman (Cr. J. G. Draper) to confer with the manager regarding the opening of the abattoir for admission of cattle or work on such special occasions under such special conditions as might from time to time be prescribed by the manager. Impressed Cars—A request for the council to make available with the least possible delay car stickers for impressed cars and identification cards for all members of the transport and first aid sections of the Emergency Precautions Scheme Organisation was made by the chairman of the Whangarei branch of the St. JohnRed Cross Society (Mr. W. J. Court). The society was much concerned that no one appeared to have the authority in Whangarei to impress cars for Red Cross transport work and other necessary purposes. It was pointed out that the question would be one for the vehicle imnrcssment committee recently appointed, I ihe letter being received. Appreciation—Appreciation of the council’s action in allowing the use of the ! Town Hall for the Northland Kennel Club’s annual show last month was expressed in a letter from the club’s secretary. With the aid of donations made in various forms the show had been a financial success, allowing the patriotic funds to benefit accordingly. “The hall was cleaner after the dog show than it is after some dances,” said the Mayor (Mr. W. Jones) in reply to a question regarding the state of the hall. Benefit Concert—Use of the Town Hall on October 29 for holding a community sing for the benefit of dependents of the late Mr. G. Larking was asked by Mr. G. Wilding in a letter on behalf of the Frivolity Four and party. It was decided to grant the use of the hall at a reduced charge. Annual Donation—A donation of £5, the same as in previous years, was made | to the Salvation Army in response to its annual appeal by the council, i Y.M.C.A. Hut —Application for a written I statement from the Whangarei Borough , I Council giving the national Y.M.C.A. authority to remove the proposed Y.M.C.A. portable hut from Kensington Park when the military camp was closed definitely, or at an earlier date if the hut was not required for military purposes, was made by the Northland representative of the association (Mr. W. J. Court) in a letter to the council. This assurance was being given by all authorities owning parks or reserves' where military camps were established. It was decided to advise the | society that there was no objection to the removal of any building it erected. S.P.C.A. Stall—Application was made by flic ladies’ committee of the S.P.C.A. for permission to hold a stall in one of the main streets for three consecutive days in November for the sale of articles made and donated by members and helpers to raise funds for the society's work. The council decided to grant permission for the stall on November 26 only. Club’s Error —Extension of the Mander Park Tennis Club’s courts for a distance of 18ft. was the subject of an application | to the council. In support of the application it was stated that the club had j reduced the area it occupied from four 1 courts to two of its own accord and in ! fixing the boundary an error of judgment | had been made. It was to rectify this ' error that the application was made. The I request was granted.
