Waipu Bowlers Piped To Pavilion

The opening of the Waipu Bowling Club was held on Saturday last. According to custom, the president and members were piped to the pavilion by the Waipu Pipe Band. The president (Mr C. Moje) welcomed visitors from Whangarei and Maungatvroto. He made reference to the loss the club had sustained through the death of a foundation member (Mr W. J. Connell). Mrs Moje threw the jack, after which the Rev. J. D. McFarlane played the first bowl. Playing conditions were rather unpleasant owing to the strong wind prevailing, but a good afternoon of full rink play was enjoyed. Croquet Club Opening Following the bowling opening, members gathered at the croquet pavilion, and Mr R. S. Durham, on behalf of the president of the croquet club (Mrs J. Durham) welcomed visitors and declared the green open, the president playing the first ball. Presentations When an adjournment was made for afternoon tea served by members of the croquet club, opportunity was taken to make farewell presentations to Mr A. C. Rees. Mr Moje expressed regret at Mr Rees’s departure, and referred to his many services to the club. He then presented an inscribed bowling bag. On behalf of the golf club, the president [Mr D. R. McKay) spoke in similar terms, and expressed good wishes to Mr and Mrs Rees, handing a golf bag to Mr Rees as a farewell gift. Mr Rees feelingly responded.
