fSpecial to “Northern Advocate”! Commencing its hearing of Northland appeals, the No. 1A Armed Forces Appeal Board sat at Maungaturoto yesterday. An appeal by Bruno Weber, farmer, of Matakohe, for Basil Charles Weber, farmer, on the grounds of undue hardship, was dismissed conditionally on Weber not being called for service prior to December 31, 1941. On the grounds of public interest and undue hardship, Martin Burke, farmer, of Mareretu, appealed for Gregory William Burke, farm-hand, the board granting an adjournment sine die subject to Burke continuing service in the Home Guard. On Own Behalf

The appeal on his own behalf on the grounds of undue hardship and conscientious objection, by Bernard Archie Brookes, farm worker, of Wharehine, was dismissed on both grounds. Tractor and truck driver, of Wharehine, Howard Ivan Witheford appealed on conscientious objection grounds. The appeal was dismissed. Frederick George Boakes, pig and dairy farmer, appealed on grounds of public interest and undue hardship, evidence in support of the appeal being given by his employer. H. W. Stewart, farmer, of Kaiwaka. The appeal was adjourned sine die, conditional on Boakes remaining in his present employment. Deferred Call The appeal of Wallace Hastie, farmer, shearer, cross-cutter and pit sawyer, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship, was supported by Robert Hastie and J. J. Russell, of Whangaripo, as co-oppellants. The appeal was dismissed, Hastie not to be called for service prior to January 31, 1942. Public interest and conscientious objection were the grounds for an appeal by Ivor Lawrence Cullen, dairyfarmer, of Maungaturoto. The appeal was dismissed subject to the condition that Cullen should be employed only on non-combatant duties in the armed forces. An appeal by the Director of National Service, Wellington, for Charles Brodie Kerr, railway tablet porter, on the grounds of public interest, was adjourned sine die, provided that Kerr remained in his present occupation.
