Russian Air Force Assists Odessa
LONDON. October 6. Russian airmen continue to render immense assistance to the defenders of Odessa, says the Moscow radio. They have smashed cavalry regiments and infantry regiments of Rumanians and airmen of the Russian Black Sea fleet have sunk three monitors and two transports and put out of action a destroyer and 10 transports. Moscow claims that on Friday 41 German planes were destroyed, the Russians losing 18. Successful air attacks on German tanks and motor transport are reported' in a communique. One German column lost by bombs and machine-gun fire 33 lorries with infantry, four companies of infantry and a squadron of cavalry. A Russian air squadron on the southern front destroyed 15 tanks and 30 motor vehicles carrying infantry. Defeat on Land Also in the south the Germans have suffered a defeat in land fighting in which they left 900 dead and wounded on the battlefield, besides eight guns, 45 machine-guns and nine mortars. At the approaches to Odessa Russian naval detachments killed over 1000 Germans. One unit smashed a battalion of storm troopers in one fight. In another fight they killed 200 Germans.
