Wiaangarei Red Cross Transport Does First Job
The transport section of the Whangarei Red Cross has performed its first job. When the train arrived from Auckland yesterday afternoon, a Red Cross transport was at the station prepared to convey the three returning overseas soldiers to their homes. They were Privates Thomas (Hilcurangi), Smedley and Keiler (Whangarei). It was discovered, however, that Private Smedley did not arrive, and that one of the remaining two men had transport to his home by private car. The other soldier, grateful for the Red Cross transport provided, was taken to the door of his home. Had the Red Cross transport not been functioning he would have been faced with a two-mile walk in teaming rain from the nearest point that public transport could take him. Driver for the transport that undertook its first Whangarei job was Mrs. Crosby. The service is also available for returned soldiers requiring transport to and from the Whangarei hospital.
