Army Allowed Disqualified Driver Special License
[Per Press Association. —Copvrightl WELLINGTON, This Day. Pointed comment on the issue by the Commissioner for Transport of a license on behalf of the Army to Aden Harry August Pearson, a soldier mechanic and linesman, was made by Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., when Pearson, aged 30, appeared before him on a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a car on Saturday night. The police stated that accused had been convicted of a similar offence last year, and had been prohibited from holding a license for a period of five years. “I think the army should be fold that, where a person has been gaoled anc; has had two or three convictions for being intoxicated m charge, he should have no warrant to drive anything on the roads,” said the magistrate. “They can let him drive round camp if they like.” After medical evidence had been heal'd, the magistrate dismissed the charge of intoxication and a further charge of driving without a license. The magistrate told the police they should get in touch with the Transport Department and ask why a license was issued in view of the court’s previous disqualifications.
