Hamburg Is Chief Target Of Strong Air Bombing Raid
[British Official Wirelessl (Received 11 a.m.) RUGBY. September 16. JJAMBURG WAS THE PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE IN NORTH-WEST GERMANY LAST NIGHT. ITS SHIPYARDS, FACTORIES AND RAILWAYS WERE ATTACKED FOR SOME HOURS BY A POWERFUL FORCE OF BOMBERS AND MANY LARGE FIRES WERE STARTED. Other German ports, including ('uxhaven and Wilhelmshavcn. were also bombed. The docks at Le Havre were heavily attacked bv another force of bombers. From these operations nine of onr aircraft are missing.
Off Frisian Islands An Air Ministry communique states that Blenheim aircraft of the Bomber Command attacked an escorted enemy convoy off the Frisian islands this afternoon. One ship was left sinking and another was hit and damaged. Other Blenheims of the same Command attacked enemy shipping in the harbour at Haguesand, on the west coast of Norway, and a factory in the same area. Our fighters made a number of offensive patrols over the Channel and enemy occupied territory today. In one of these patrols an enemy fighter was destroyed. We lost two aircraft, a bomber and a fighter. 200 Bombers Engaged Over 200 bombers were engaged in last night’s operations over Germany and German occupied territory. A Royal. Air Force fighter shot down a Messerschmitt 109 off the French coast this morning.
