Hollings Wins Bay Golf Championship
The Bay of Islands golf championships, held at Waitangi and conducted by the Russell Golf Club, proved highly successful. The playing conditions were ideal while a strong southerly wind blowing across many of the fairways made play sufficiently tricky to extend all players and brought about the downfall of many. The course was in good condition, with the gTeens playing fast and true. Kaikohe Successes
There was a number of fine performances, a feature of the day’s play being the popular win of the championship by W. Hollings (Kaikohe) and the meritorious win of the medal handicap by the youthful A. Borrows (Kaikohe).
In making the presentations, the president of the Russell Golf Club (H. J. Keenan) welcomed the visitors and expressed pleasure at seeing such a large representative gathering. He expressed special thanks to the tournament scorers (Messrs. Williams and MacGregor) and to the Paihia Patriotic Committee, who were responsible for the excellent catering. £22 for Funds On completion of presentations, Messrs. Lusk, Wells and Sutherland undertook to see that the patriotic cause was well supported. A parcel donated by Mr. Lusk, together with three home-made sponges, on being sold realised the sum of £l2/12/-. This brought the total sum for the patriotic funds to approximately £22.
