Sympathy Expressed Sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. John McLennan was expressed in a resolution passed at a meeting of the directors of the Whangarei Cooperative Dairy Company. Mr. McLennan was a foundation member of the company and sat on the first directorate, retaining his seat for 29 years till he retired about five years ago. * * * * Interest In Music “It is gratifying to see so much interest in music here,” commented the examiner for the Royal College of Music (Mr Lloyd Powell), who was in Whangarei yesterday. At the conclusion of the war Mr Powell expected there would be an even greater interest in music and other arts. This would be particularly noticed in England, he thought. * * * * Serious Charges A Maori, Pene Hori Takimoana, aged 35, of Oromahoe, appeared in the Kaikohe Court on Monday morning before Messrs J. J. Bedggocd and N. A. Ellery. J.P’s. on two charges of incest. He pleaded guilty to both charges and was committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland for sentence. * * * * Kaikohe Farewell A farewell afternoon was held by members of the Kaikohe Maori Women’s Institute in the Kaikohe Native School on Saturdaj r afternoon in honour of Mrs. J. V. Wallace, who is soon to leave the district for Levin. On behalf of the members, Mesdames S. Gilberd and Taimana spoke of their appreciation of Mrs. Wallace's services in the institute and wished her happiness in her new home. * * * * Ohaeawai Band Visit On Sunday next the band of the Second Company N.M.R. of Ohaeawai will visit Whangarei as guests of the Whangarei Municipal Band. A full programme has been arranged. In the morning both bands will attend a church parade at the Baptist Church and in the afternoon massed band items will be given at Kensington military camp. On Sunday night a mass bands concert will be presented in the Whangarei Town Hall, proceeds to be devoted to patriotic funds. 130 • * * a Mt. Eden Hockey Visit When the Mt. Eden hockey club teams visited Whangarei recently the suggestion was made that home-and-home matches should be made a regular feature, Mt. Eden teams travelling to Whangarei at one end of the season and Whangarei reciprocating the visit at the other end of the season. The principle of the suggestion was approved by the Whangarei Hockey Association at its monthly meeting when thanks were also expressed to the Mt. Eden club for travelling to Whangarei this year.

* - * * Kiripaka lI.G. Shoot Good average shooting was performed by the Kiripaka platoon of B Company Home Guard at a musketry practice held at Clemo’s paddock at the week-end. The shoot was performed with .22 calibre rifles loaned by the iocal rifle club, the ammunition being purchased Horn the club owing to insufficient ammunition having been issued by the authorities. Four practices, each of five rounds, were fired covering grouping, application, snap and rapid fire. Although the shooting ranged from good to fair, the average score was 52 over the whole platoon out of a possible 85. Scores ranged from 63 to 43. * * # * Warning To Counsel “This has occurred several times, and although I understand the difficulties of counsel in these times I do not want this to occur again,” said the magistrate (Mr. Raymond Ferner) in the Whangarei Court this morning. Counsel for a plaintiff had not appeared when the case was called and the magistrate ordered it to be struck out. Before the court rose, however, another solicitor said he had been in touch with the counsel who had not appeared and apologised on his behalf, stating that the case had been omitted from his list, and asking for judgment. The magistrate said on this occasion he would allow the case to be recalled and judgment was given.
