Farmers Using Meat Meal As Manure?
The suggestion that some farmers were using meat meal from Moerewa as a manure, was made by an officer of the Auckland provincial office of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union in a letter to the secretary of the Whangarei branch of the union (Mr. F Simmonds). Acting on instructions from the last meeting of the branch, Mr. Simmonds wrote inquiring concerning the scarcity of Moerewa meat meal on the local market. "We have been in touch with the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company,” the later stated, “and are informed that the Moerewa works are not sending any meat meal out of the territory. Apparently what is hap pening is that some farmers are ordering meat meal and using it as a manure. which the Farmers’ Freezing Company cannot countenance as there is not sufficient output to cope with the meal if used as a manure as well as I a stock food.”
Expensive Manure
Mr. Simmonds said that the meal would be a fairly expensive item it used for manure.
While Mr. Simmonds had no particular experience of the meal as a manure, he felt it would probably require additional ingredients to be thoroughly effective. He did not know of the meal being analysed for its chemical content as applied to efficacy oi manure.
