U.S. Petrol To Keep Spain Out Of War

NEW YORK, Sept. 4. It is learned in Washington that the United States Government is permitting the shipment to Spain cf large quantities of petroleum products in an effort to keep Spain from entering the war on the side of the Axis, in a policy similar to the one tried, but for the present abandoned, with Japan. The State Department has sanctioned a steady stream of Spanish tankers calling at Port Arthur, Texas, for cargoes of oil and petrol for Bilboa, Santander, Barcelona and Malaga. It is understood tht Export Control Administration has investigated the position and feels assured that none of the petrol is being diverted to Germany.
