More Entries In Northland Kennel Show

With entries coming from as far south as the Waikato, and from further north centres, the Northland Kennel Club’s annual show was opened this morning.

In all 91 dogs have been entered, an increase in the number shown last j year, and of these 40 are from outside ! districts. This year the fixture is being j organised as a patriotic effort bn the i part of the club, all proceeds going to j patriotic funds. The kennel club usually holds its I show in conjunction wtih the Winter I Show, but with the Winter Show being abandoned for this year, the club has proceeded on its own and, judging by the entries and the interest shown this morning, the fixture promises to be most successful. Unusual Exhibit Held in the Town Hall, both exhibitors and the public are provided with more comfortable quarters than at previous shows, and these facilities are greatly appreciated by all concerned. Refreshments are being provided by the ladies of the patriotic committee. A class of dog not usually seen in Whangarei, an Old English sheep dog, was one of the animals exhibited, while West Highland white terriers are more numerous than in previous years. Springer spaniels, setters and I collies are perhaps the strongest classes, so far as number of entries are concerned. Improved Standard Speaking on the dogs he had judged this morning, the president of the New Zealand Kennel Club (Mr. Norman Wade), one of this country’s bestknown judges. said that the class of dog was very good, especially the collies. which showed a soundness that had been rather absent during the past years. The class of dog had shown a tendency to weak hocks, but this defect was not apparent in the collies shown this morning, said Mr.- Wade. The spaniels had made a good showing, and the bulldogs exhibited were fine specimens. Awards: — Bulldogs.—Novice: A. Roger 1. W. A. Pye 2. Limit: \V. A. Pye 1. New Zealand bred: W. A. Pye 1. Open: A.
