fPer Press Association.—Copyright] WELLINGTON, This Day. “This Bill involves abolishing the death sentence for murder and the substitution of hard labour for life, and abolition of flogging and whipping with consequent amendments to the Crimes Act,” said the Attorney-Gen-eral (Mr. Mason) when the Crimes Amendment Bill was introduced in the House last night. The Bill was read a first time. When the* Bill made its appearance the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. Holland) asked for an explanation of its provisions. “I take it this Bill will provide some new punishment for people who try to murder warders in gaols,” he said. Mr. Holland also asked if there was any provision for punishment of conscientious objectors. Mr. A. S. Richards (Govt.-Roskill) : Or anonymous letter-writers ? Mr. Mason (to Mr. Holland) : The Bill may not come up to the expectations of the honourable gentleman.
