Soldier Admitted Stealing Blankets

[Per Press Association—Copyright] NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. An Australian, Ray Ashworth, aged 43, appeared in battle-dress in the New Plymouth Police Court yesterday and admitted theft. Because the military authorities wanted him for overstaying his leave, Ashworth was detained by a constable at Rahotu on Tuesday, and was subsequently arrested by the army and lodged in the New Plymouth lock-up. Being under suspicion he was questioned about the theft of five blankets, and eventually admitted the offence. Justices of the Peace yesterday ordered him to come up for sentence within six months if called upon. A military escort will take Ashworth back to Wellington. The escort corporal, when questioned by the bench, said Ashworth enlisted on April 9, 1941, and was on duty with Guards Vital Points at Wellington. «-
