Allied Troops Did First-Class Job
LONDON, July 13.
“The Allied troops have done a first class job throughout,” said Lieut.-Gen-eral J. D. Lavarack, commanding the Australian troops in Syria. “The nature of the country dictated that we must wipe out the enemy posts one by one. “Small parties fought battles like those of the Litani River and Damour, where they were faced by very difficult country consisting of boulders and hills. Soon Proved Themselves “Junior officers showed tremendous initiative, although many of them had not previously been in action, and the higher staff did magnificent work in getting ammunition and food over long distances.”
Indian troops advancing along the Syrian-Turkish frontier occupied Tellabi'ad, 160' miles north of Aleppo. The Ankara radio states that all the Vichy warships which have taken refuge in Alexandretta, and their disarmed. crews, have been interned.
