Escaped Monkey’s Frolic In Sydney
SYDNEY, May 1
A young monkey escaped from Wirth's Circus yesterday afternoon and, before being captured, robbed an elderly spinster of her lorgnette; licked the bald head of an elderly gentleman in Oxford Street; snatched a baby’s milk bottle, and attempted to sell newspapers. Miss E. Walker, of Oxford Street, was on her way to vespers when the monkey leaped from a truck and seized her lorgnette, which was sangling on a silver chain. The monkey quizzed at the crowd through the lorgnette. Miss Walker leaped behind a fruit barrow. The monkey snatched an armful of grapes and raced into Waine Street, where it leaped into a baby’s pram. It put the grapes under the eiderdown and played with the baby’s milk bottle. Pursued by a number of children; the monkey ran into Oxford Street and stood next to a paper-seller and began to give away free copies of the Paper. A short-sighted old gentleman in Oxford Street bent down to stroke what he thought was a cat, and the monkey leaped on to his bald head and started squealing. Then the monkey leaped through the fanlight of a motor garage and hid among the spare parts. It stayed there until it was captured by circus hands after dinner.
