Brothers, Formerly Of Whangarei, Missing

Advice has been received by Mr. E. A. McKinlay, now of Hamilton, but formerly residing in Mill Road, Whangarei, that both his sons are missing after operations in the Middle East. Sergeant, W. H. McKinlay came through the Greek compaign but has not returned to his unit after the Crete fighting. He went overseas -Cvith the First Echelon, having enlisted at the outbreak of war. Prior to the war he was on the staff of the Treasury Department. The elder brother, Gunner H. R. McKinlay, went overseas with the Fourth Reinforcements, being employed at Napier with the Union Steamship Company prior to enlistment. Gunner McKinlay was posted missing after the Greek campaign.

SGT. T. McKOY Well-known in many centres in Northland where he was a school teacher, Sergeant Terence McKoy has been reported missing, advice to this effect having been received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. A. R. McKoy, of Whangarei. The elder son, Sergeant McKoy, was born in Hamilton and educated at the Hawera High School, the Auckland Training College and Auckland University College. He followed his profession in Northland at Oromahoe, after serving at Pakaraka, Waima, Hokonui and relieving at Whangarei. Before going overseas with the Second Echelon he played representative cricket for South Taranaki and Whangarei and, as an all-round athlete, he was prominent in boxing, swimming and hockey. He served in England, Egypt and Greece before going to Crete from where he was last reported.

PTE. G. MURDOCH

Mr. and Mrs. L. Murdoch, of Tangiteroria, have received news of their son, Pte. Gordon Murdoch, who was reported wounded in Crete. After a week’s action he was wounded in the thigh by shrapnel, but hopes to be out of hospital soon. He sent home in his letter a piece of fabric torn from a wrecked German plane as he passed it. Crete was a peaceful island turned into a roaring battlefield by planes which machine-gunned and bombed anything and everything from dawn until dusk.

DRIVER F. V. SNELGAR Advice was received yesterday by Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Snelgar, Kioreroa, that their son, Driver Frank Victor Snelgar, has been reported missing. Educated in Karangahake, he came to Whangarei in 1938, and was gardening for Mr. George Wordsworth. He went overseas with the Third Echelon. Another son, William Roy Snelgar, is in Papakura Camp. Private Frank Snelgar took a keen interest in League football and cricket. He was a member of the Albion Cricket Club.
